there goes the neighborhood....
filed under: life

the students are back. so is the traffic, the long lines in restaurants and target and home depot. and football. i love football, but it's the reason i've learned the back streets of this town - anything i can do to avoid the main thoroughfares during a football game day is a good thing.

at least i'll be out of town this weekend. the bf's parents are taking me to fredericksburg and the saltlick for my b-day. hooray! i'm very excited. :)

glutton for punishment
speaking of - nick's mom and i are now co-renters of a booth in yesteryears - an antique and gift shop in caldwell, texas. i now have another dba and a sales tax permit...and more fabric and paint and card stuff than i know what to do with while i get things assembled to put in there. and the kolache festival is in three weeks. we have three weeks to fill the booth - that's when about 700 people will go through the store in one day. can you say push to work?

i took a bookkeeping class yesterday and found out i have to use the accrual method when keeping track of records since i'll have inventory. so now i have a copy of accounting software on the way...and i spent a lot of time last night setting up the books (again. properly.) for the web design business. i started on stuff for ribbons and lace (the new business), but the inventory thing was starting to bog me down - especially since i'm assembling. i haven't decided how detailed of an inventory i want to keep yet. oy. what a headache. and trying to think about it at 2am doesn't help really...

playing
filed under: life

sometimes i wish i wasn't so considerate. or maybe that i lived in a house where i didn't have really close neighbors. it's hard to find time to practice the fiddle. and, now that i've been told you can hear it outside pretty well, i find it hard to bow properly - so i pick up bad habits.

regardless, somehow it's going really well. heh, my fiddle teacher asked me tonight if i was considering buying an instrument any time soon. don't i wish. will need to save up money to do that - probably will be another six months at least before i can even think about it.

wonder what i've been up to?
filed under: life

i've been on a creative kick lately. aside from rearranging my study, arranging flowers, and hanging stuff up that i've been putting off, i've started painting again, mostly on windows.

here's an example: (you can see others under "crafty things" under photography)

Roses and Lace

the other that i finished is currently in the booth waiting to be sold. i think i might keep this one. not sure quite yet.

more pictures
filed under: life

key west pictures are beginning to show up. i've got a few from my last day there. i hope to get the rest uploaded sometime this weekend, as well as others that i'd like to get out there and done. adding them is the not-fun part, however, since they're uploaded one at a time.

i added pictures to the website (look under 'photography'). i added graduation pictures and ones from my port aransas trip last october. i hope to get my key west pictures up soon - at least the really cool ones. but right now i'm going to go to bed before i qwerty onto my keyboard.

what a morning!
filed under: life

no, really! i mean that in a good way.

it was so beautiful when i stepped out of my door this morning. it was warm, but not hot yet. there was a cool breeze - the swirling kind that just seems to wrap you up like a blanket. high clouds in a kind of wallpaper-type print on the blue sky. and, of course, lots of dappled shade. i really like living near a lot of trees. while it can mean snakes and other, uh, interesting wildlife, it's also very nice to look out your window and feel like you're in a treehouse. more than once i've fallen asleep in the afternoon watching leaves dance just outside the winow.

retreat!
filed under: life

ever noticed how retreats for organizations tend to be very tiring? i couldn't go to sleep, but boy is my brain tired this evening.

on the other hand, somehow the fiddling is going especially well tonight. i think it's because i've finally adjusted where my hand should be so i can hit all the right finger positions. i'm really close to in tune! :) yay! what's really odd is that i can't play sitting down. it's a good think i'm not in an orchestra. heh. sitting down makes me twist up all funny and hunch over and....play horrible. plus i feel like i can't think. i guess it comes from singing and playing the dulcimer and the handbells standing up.

the church

based on what i've read in other blogs, what i have to say about the whole episcopal church thing may set some people off. but it's my church and i'm entitled to my opinions. granted, don't get me wrong, i'm not someone who hates homosexual people or thinks they're satan's spawn or something. they're entitled to their relationships and such, but somehow i don't think they should be church leaders when the bible so clearly puts out a position on the subject. people may bring forward the women in clergy subject - in which case i'll point them to some of the epistles where paul sends greetings to women who are in charge of congregations in different areas. but somehow i can't see the church having a gay bishop. it just seems...wrong. that's my opinion.

it should be interesting to go to church this sunday and hear the reactions of the congregation.

i'm here! i'm here!
filed under: life

i'll post later about my trip to key west. the conference was great, and i hope to get pictures up from that too. the trip there was horrible, and i'm just now able to talk or write about it without getting horribly upset. (canceled flights and harrassment. aie!)

i spent last week moving to my new office. (yay!) this weekend we went to canton (imagine a garage sale/craft show that covers acres and acres), and i came back with lots and lots of vintage fabric and pillow cases...only to find out that when i rearranged my study this afternoon somehow i knocked the needle on my sewing machine askew. well, not the needle, but the whole part that holds the needle. time to look for a repair guide online, i guess. :/

anyway, life's been hectic and i've been reading instead of doing anything else. i've finished the da vinci code (see earlier post), the dante club (like shakespeare it took a while to get into the language, but it was a great book once i got a hold of the writing style), children of the storm (another great amelia peabody book), and the bourne identity (i finished that this weekend. wow. completely different and so much better than the movie!). i'm working on the winter queen - a russian murder mystery novel. it's good so far, and the translator even footnotes the bits that are in french or russian. bless him. :)

this last week in a nutshell. haven't touched the dulcimer or fiddle in a few weeks. i suppose i should play the fiddle tonight since i have a lesson tomorrow! :/
