after going through the stack of the "who knows what the hell this is" stuff that was lurking in my office, i'm starting to see the type of people who were in this job and associated with it before i started. aside from the one who was stealing money, there was the assistant whose idea of filing was to find a drawer, cabinet, filing cabinet, inbox, etc - really any space that was horizontal and not moving - and proceed to hide whatever filing she had been asked to do. i can't tell you how many things i've come across that have a note attached to create a new file. at this point, it's too late now - i'm just going to stuff it into end of the year filing labeled 2003 and 2002(!).
oh, and then there was the (brief) controller who printed out practically every thing he did on the computer - talk about a waste of paper. you can't read his handwriting either, so it's really a lost cause to keep anything that he might have left. there's no way to tell what it is.
and the one after him, she wasn't around long enough to cause too much damage....or do much filing. the assistant mentioned above quit just after she started. so, the filing didn't get better, it just got worse.
and then the temps. oy. the don't even look through stuff, they just stick it in a file and move on. probably half of what was actually filed was filed correctly. the other half we've had to redo. probably why the assistant controller and i are still doing end of the year filing in may. :/
